Statsradiofoniens Symfoniorkester(English:The Danish State Radio Symphony Orchestra) was the name from 1925 to 1959 of the symphony orchestra of Statsradiofonien (DR), the Danish national broadcasting corporation. One of the world’s oldest radio symphony orchestras, it debuted with 11 musicians on 28 October 1925 conducted byLauny Grøndahlin a studio concert transmitted nationwide in Denmark. In 1927 the orchestra performed in public for the first time, and it began to give weekly concerts in 1928.Nicolai Malkowas recruited in 1930 as a regular guest conductor, and by 1931 it employed 58 musicians. After going into exile from nazi-Germany in the 1930’s,Fritz Buschworked extensively as a conductor of the orchestra. By 1948, the orchestra had attained membership of 92 musicians and thus the largest symphony orchestra in Scandinavia. Besides Grøndahl (1925-56), other permanent conductors during this period wereErik Tuxen(1936-57) andThomas Jensen(1957-63). Early concerts took place in the Axelborg building in Copenhagen, and in 1931 the orchestra began to perform at “Stærekassen” (later renamed toDet Kongelige Teater, Nye Scene). The orchestra gave their first concert atRadiohusets Koncertsalin 1945, their permanent base until 2009. In 1959 the orchestra changed name toDanmarks Radios Symfoniorkester.
